Changing Lives Through Health and Sigh

About the Practice

What is Claremore Eye Associates?

Claremore Eye Associates is a full-service, independent optometry practice serving patients in Claremore and the surrounding Rogers and Mayes County area. We provide comprehensive eye exams, medical eye care, specialty services, and a full optical boutique — all under one roof. Our mission is simple: changing lives through health and sight. Every patient who walks through our doors receives personalized, unhurried care focused on their unique vision needs and overall eye health.

How long has Claremore Eye Associates been in Claremore?

Claremore Eye Associates has been caring for the vision and eye health of our community for over 50 years. The practice was founded in 1973 by Dr. Steve L. Smith, and today is owned and led by his daughter, Dr. Lacy Crissup. That continuity means deep roots in this community and a long tradition of trust, personalized care, and clinical excellence.

Who are the doctors at Claremore Eye Associates?

Our practice is led by Dr. Lacy Crissup, owner and senior optometrist, who joined her father in practice in 2009 and assumed full ownership in 2023. Dr. Chelsea Leonard joined our team in 2025 after graduating from optometry school — and her story is a special one. She first came to Claremore Eye Associates as a receptionist and technician, fell in love with the field, pursued her doctorate, and came back to the practice she helped build. Together, they bring a shared commitment to exceptional, personalized eye care.

Why should I choose an independent optometry practice over a national chain or retail vision center?

At an independent practice like Claremore Eye Associates, your care is never rushed, never templated, and never driven by sales quotas. You see the same doctors at every visit — doctors who know your history, remember your preferences, and take the time to understand your lifestyle and health goals. Our exams go well beyond a basic prescription check. We use advanced diagnostic equipment to monitor your long-term eye health, and we offer specialty services that most retail chains simply don't provide. When you choose an independent practice, you're choosing a team that is genuinely invested in your wellbeing — not just your next pair of glasses.

Do you see patients for eye emergencies?

Yes. If you are experiencing a sudden change in vision, eye pain, a foreign object in your eye, or another urgent eye concern, please call or text us at (918) 341-8211 as soon as possible. We do our best to see urgent patients quickly and will work to get you in the same day when we can. Your eye health is our priority.

How far in advance do I need to schedule?

We recommend scheduling your annual eye exam as early as convenient, as our schedule can fill up — especially during back-to-school season. In most cases, we can accommodate appointments within one to two weeks. If you need to be seen sooner, don't hesitate to reach out. We always do our best to accommodate new and existing patients in a timely manner.

Do you see patients from outside Claremore?

Absolutely. While we are based in Claremore, we proudly serve patients from throughout Rogers and Mayes counties and the surrounding area. Many of our patients travel to us specifically for our specialty services and the personalized level of care that is hard to find elsewhere in the region.

Exams & Services

What is included in a comprehensive eye exam?

A comprehensive eye exam at Claremore Eye Associates is much more than a prescription check. We evaluate your complete eye health from front to back, as well as your visual needs for your unique lifestyle. We test your visual acuity, eye coordination, and peripheral vision. We also examine the internal and external structures of your eyes to screen for conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and cataracts. Many systemic health conditions — including diabetes, high blood pressure, and autoimmune disorders — can show early signs in the eyes, and our doctors are trained to recognize them. You leave with a clear picture of both your vision and your overall eye health.

How is your exam different from a quick vision screening?

A vision screening — like those offered at schools, pharmacies, or retail kiosks — only checks whether you can see clearly at a distance. It cannot detect eye disease, evaluate eye health, or provide a prescription. A comprehensive exam at Claremore Eye Associates evaluates the full health of your eyes using advanced diagnostic technology, and is performed by a licensed doctor of optometry who takes the time to understand your unique health history, lifestyle, and visual needs. There is simply no comparison.

Do you see children?

Yes, and we love it. We recommend children have their first comprehensive eye exam as early as six months of age, and regularly after that through their school years. Good vision is essential to learning, and many vision problems in children go undetected because kids don't always know what "normal" vision looks like. Our team is experienced in making young patients feel comfortable and welcome, and we take the time to explain everything in a way that works for both kids and their parents.

Do you offer contact lens exams and fittings?

Yes. A contact lens exam includes additional measurements and evaluation beyond a standard eye exam to ensure the best possible fit, comfort, and vision. Whether you are a first-time contact lens wearer or looking to update your current lenses, our doctors will work with you to find the right lens for your eyes and your lifestyle. We also specialize in fitting patients with difficult or high prescriptions, including custom powered soft lenses, rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses, and scleral lenses — options that can make a meaningful difference for patients who have struggled to find comfortable, clear vision with standard lenses.

What is myopia management and does my child need it?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is becoming increasingly common in children — and it is more than just a prescription issue. When myopia progresses rapidly, it increases the long-term risk of serious eye conditions like retinal detachment and glaucoma. Myopia management uses proven treatment methods to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children, protecting their vision and eye health for years to come. Claremore Eye Associates has been offering myopia management for over eight years, giving us a depth of experience and knowledge that sets us apart from practices just beginning to offer this service. If your child's prescription seems to be changing every year, it may be time to ask us about myopia management.

What is dry eye, and how do you treat it?

Dry eye is a chronic condition where your eyes do not produce enough tears, or produce tears that evaporate too quickly. It can cause discomfort, blurry vision, redness, and a gritty or burning sensation. At Claremore Eye Associates, we take a comprehensive approach to dry eye care — evaluating the underlying causes of your condition and building a personalized treatment plan that fits your life. We offer in-office treatments as well as at-home care recommendations tailored to your specific situation.

Do you care for patients with diabetes or macular degeneration?

Yes, and this is an area we are especially passionate about. Diabetes can cause significant damage to the blood vessels in the retina — often before any symptoms are noticeable — making regular dilated eye exams essential for diabetic patients. Macular degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss, and early detection and monitoring are critical to preserving sight. We have invested in advanced diagnostic equipment specifically capable of detecting the earliest signs of macular degeneration, giving us the ability to intervene sooner and monitor changes more precisely. Claremore Eye Associates is recognized in our area as a leading medical eye care provider, and we are committed to proactive, personalized care for patients managing these and other eye health conditions.

What specialized diagnostic equipment do you use?

We invest in advanced technology because it allows us to provide a higher level of care. Our diagnostic suite includes high-definition OCT (optical coherence tomography) imaging, Optos ultra-widefield retinal imaging, and comprehensive visual field testing. These tools allow our doctors to detect subtle changes in your eye health earlier, monitor conditions more precisely, and make more informed treatment decisions — all of which means better outcomes for you.

Do you handle eye emergencies in-office?

Yes. If you are experiencing sudden vision changes, loss of vision, eye pain, a foreign object in your eye, flashes of light, new floaters, or a red and irritated eye, please contact us right away at (918) 341-8211. We make every effort to see urgent patients the same day. Handling eye emergencies in-office means you get care from a doctor who knows your history, using the diagnostic equipment needed to properly evaluate your condition — rather than a general urgent care clinic that may not have the specialized tools or training for eye care.

Optical & Eyewear

Do you have an optical boutique on-site?

Yes! Our optical boutique is located right inside our office, making it convenient to select your eyewear immediately following your exam. Our team is knowledgeable and takes the time to help you find frames and lenses that fit your face, your lifestyle, and your budget. We carefully curate our frame selection to offer a blend of unique styles, trusted brands, and quality options at a range of price points.

What frame brands do you carry?

We carry a thoughtfully selected mix of brands that balance style, quality, and value. Our current collection includes Coach, CoCo Song, Michael Kors, Oakley, Pair Eyewear, Ray-Ban, Swarovski, and Tory Burch, among others. We are also proud to carry State and American Optical frames, which are made in the USA by a family owned company. Beyond everyday eyewear, our optical boutique also features sunwear, sports eyewear, and safety frames — so whether you need protection on the job, performance on the field, or style in the sun, we have options to fit your life. We regularly refresh our selection to bring in new styles and emerging brands. If you are looking for something specific, our optical team is happy to help you find the right fit.

Can I use my prescription from your exam to buy glasses in your office?

Absolutely. After your exam, our optical team is ready to help you select frames and discuss lens options that match your prescription and your lifestyle. We review your previous optical history to understand what has worked well for you in the past, and we take the time to explain your lens options so you can make an informed decision. You are never rushed, and you are never pressured.

Why should I buy glasses at Claremore Eye Associates instead of online?

Buying eyewear online might seem convenient, but it comes with real risks — incorrect measurements, poor lens quality, and no professional guidance on fit or lens selection. When you purchase glasses at Claremore Eye Associates, you benefit from precise measurements taken by our trained team, high-quality lenses from trusted labs, and expert advice on which lens designs and coatings will best serve your vision and lifestyle. If something isn't right, we are here to make it right. That level of service and accountability simply isn't available from an online retailer.

Do you offer lens options beyond basic single vision?

Yes. We offer a full range of lens options to meet your specific visual needs, including progressive lenses, bifocals, computer and occupational lenses, anti-reflective coatings, blue light filtering, photochromic lenses, and high-index lenses for stronger prescriptions. We also offer small and progressive prism lenses, as well as therapeutic tints that can provide meaningful relief for patients dealing with conditions like computer vision syndrome, migraines, and post-stroke or traumatic brain injury visual disturbances. Our optical team takes the time to understand how you use your eyes every day — at work, outdoors, on screens — and recommends lens solutions that are genuinely personalized to your life.

Insurance & Payment

What insurance plans do you accept?

We accept a wide range of vision and medical insurance plans, including VSP, EyeMed, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, MetLife, Unity Vision, and PVCS. We also accept Medicare. Our team is happy to help you understand your benefits and make the most of your coverage. Don't see your plan listed? Give us a call or text at (918) 341-8211 — we accept many additional plans not listed here and are happy to check your coverage before your visit.

What if my vision insurance isn't listed?

We may still be able to see you! In addition to the plans we are in-network with, we work with many additional vision insurance plans on an out-of-network basis. This means your plan may still reimburse a portion of your exam or eyewear costs, even if we are not a contracted provider with your insurer. The best part — you don't have to call your insurance company to find out. Our team can verify your out-of-network benefits directly through our office software before your visit. Just call or text us at (918) 341-8211 and we will be happy to check your coverage and walk you through what to expect.

Do you accept Medicare?

Yes. Medicare covers medically necessary eye care, including exams related to conditions like diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other eye health concerns. It does not typically cover routine vision exams or eyewear. Our team can help you understand what your Medicare coverage includes and how to best utilize your benefits during your visit.

What if I don't have vision insurance?

No insurance? No problem. We welcome patients without vision insurance and offer transparent pricing for our services. You can view our current fees on our website at www.claremoreeyeassociates.com. We also offer a cash pay discount for patients paying out of pocket — call or text us at (918) 341-8211 to ask about our current cash pay pricing. Many patients find that the value of a comprehensive exam at Claremore Eye Associates — including our advanced diagnostics and personalized care — is well worth the investment in their long-term eye health.

What is the difference between medical insurance and vision insurance for eye care?

Vision insurance is designed to cover routine eye care — annual exams, frames, lenses, and contact lenses. Medical insurance, including Medicare, covers eye care related to health conditions such as diabetes, glaucoma, dry eye, macular degeneration, and eye infections. Depending on the reason for your visit, one or both types of insurance may apply. Our team is experienced in billing both types of insurance and will work to maximize your benefits at every visit.

Do you offer any financing options?

Yes. We accept CareCredit, a healthcare financing card that allows you to pay for your eye care and eyewear over time with convenient monthly payment options. CareCredit can be used for exams, glasses, contact lenses, and specialty services. If you are interested in applying, visit www.carecredit.com or ask our team at your next visit.

Contact Lenses

Can I order contact lenses through your office?

Yes. We make reordering contact lenses as convenient as possible. You can order directly through our office by calling or texting us at (918) 341-8211, or shop our online contact lens store any time at www.claremoreeyeassociates.com. We carry a wide selection of contact lens brands and can have your lenses shipped directly to your home.

Do you carry specialty contact lenses?

Yes. In addition to standard soft contact lenses, we fit a range of specialty lenses for patients with more complex vision needs. This includes custom powered soft lenses for difficult or high prescriptions, rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses, and scleral lenses. If you have struggled to find comfortable, clear vision with standard contact lenses, we encourage you to ask us about specialty options — there may be a solution that makes a real difference for you.

Can I reorder contacts online?

Yes! Our online contact lens store is available any time at www.claremoreeyeassociates.com. You can reorder your lenses and have them shipped directly to your home. If you have questions about your prescription or need help selecting the right lenses, our team is always available by call or text at (918) 341-8211.

Patient Experience

What should I bring to my first appointment?

For your first visit, please bring your insurance card, a valid photo ID, and any eyewear you currently use — including your regular glasses, task or computer glasses, reading glasses, and sunglasses. If you wear contact lenses, bring those as well. If you have records or imaging from a previous eye care provider, those can be helpful too. We also encourage you to come ready to share a little about your lifestyle — the visual tasks you do every day, your hobbies, your work environment, and any concerns you have about your vision or eye health. The more we know about you, the better we can personalize your care.

How long will my appointment take?

A comprehensive eye exam at Claremore Eye Associates typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on your individual needs and whether additional testing is recommended. We do not rush our appointments. Our goal is for every patient to leave feeling thoroughly cared for and confident in their visit — not like they were moved through an assembly line. If you are also shopping in our optical boutique after your exam, plan a little extra time to enjoy the experience.
